| Renzoku-waza means combination techniques. These are very short forms, usually consisting of block-attacks taken from the kata. These are practiced in order to improve understanding of the kata. In Kansas City we practice a number of renzoku-waza including: Ten no Kata, developed by Master Funakoshi who said "The Ten no Kata may be called the introductory kata to sparring, and thus is is a kata for sparring to be practiced by oneself. Always imagine an opponent and practice this form diligently." Nidan Renzoku-waza, the block attack combinations demonstrated during the nidan (second degree black belt) examination. Kumite Renzoku-waza, combinations of up to six techniques developed by Jon Beltram around 1970 to improve fighting technique. Tai Sabaki, body shifting combinations. |
